Havelock – Gateway to the sounds

Havelock is the gateway to Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds, and is steeped in Maori and European history.

Ernest Rutherford and William Pickering both attended school in Havelock

In the past Havelock has had boom times with timber and gold.

These days the biggest local employer is the mussel industry.

The mussel farming industry in the Marlborough Sounds started in the 1960s. The early days of the industry were dominated by research and development.
